Robust electoral battles puts the IEC’s credibility on trial

Tomorrow, citizens of our Republic who qualify for special voting will begin exercising their democratic right to elect representatives to serve in local government.

On Wednesday, 4 November, millions of South Africans will proceed to voting stations across the country to determine the political leadership of their municipalities. Once again, our democracy will undergo one of its most important tests: whether the people’s sovereign will can be expressed freely, peacefully, and without interference.

Understandably, the nation’s attention will be directed to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the constitutional institution entrusted with administering our elections. We expect nothing less than administrative competence, institutional impartiality and operational readiness.
